Taiwan government authorities astounded at Intel WiMAX move

Intel’s announcement regarding its support on the WiMAX technology became very popular as the company’s decision affected the concerns of many people. According to the Taipei Times (one of the leading newspapers in Taiwan), a government official said that the authorities are trying to look at the possible consequences that the Intel move will have on both local WiMAX equipment producers and on its own scheme on LTE, which were already quite obvious. Intel’s determination to regroup its attempts on WiMAX has forced the Taiwanese authorities to reconsider their stance on LTE, a long-running development, as the next 4G standard.

Taiwanese support on the WiMAX technology

Over the past years, Taiwan has proved to be one of the strongest supporters of the WiMAX engineering science versus its major 4G rival, the LTE technology that is a long-running development. At present, Taiwanese firms are in full gear to distribute telecommunication equipment and electronics that back up WiMAX technology. Government authorities are ordered to re-examine the state of the fourth-generation wireless (4G) policy through the end of this calendar month following Intel Corporation’s sudden move to break up the task force on WiMAX, an official said yesterday.

Intel WiMAXWiMAX as the standard

However, Intel assured that it is still fully supporting WiMAX. Nevertheless, this statement did not seem to have calmed neither the authorities’ nor the local industrys’ growing concerns about WiMAX.  On July 7, JT Wang, chairperson of the influential Taipei Computer Association (TCA), came across Intel VP Navin Shenoy and told him that the Taiwanese makers consider WiMAX as a landmark in 4G technology. He further added that this is the standard that the makers want the majority to adapt to. Moreover, he also told Intel that it should involve Taiwan as a worldwide partner in its global business in the future and provide further support in pushing WiMAX as the major criterion of 4G technology.

INTEL’s reaction

Intel considers and claims that it has, at this point, reached a similar point with WiMAX as it made out with WLAN and does not ask to take the initiating role it initially had.
Intel said that the reorganization of its WiMAX building block does not imply that it is retracting its support for WiMAX. TechEye said that two weeks ago, Intel was still devoted to the wireless wideband standard. Authorities supporting WiMAX, to some extent, has implied the nation has been inactive in acting towards the LTE technology as the National Communications committee hasn’t come up with a clear-cut plan to auction LTE certificates for local telecommunication operators.
The Taipei Times said that the Ministry of Economical Affairs is assessing how crucial LTE will be to WiMAX as a swashed “4G” reply to telecoms.
